About Kim Goodacre

Hi, I’m Kim

I’m a professional writer and editor from the UK. When I’m not working on author debuts, I teach English and Creative Writing at my local primary school: supporting literacy development through storytelling, games and fun!

This site mainly supports that work. If you’re a young person interested in writing stories, or an adult wanting to help a child with their literacy, head over to Little Writer, Big Reader!

However, a small section of this site follows my own journey to publication. If you’re interested in finding out what I’m working on at the moment, check out News & Updates.

Happy reading!

What do I do?

Fiction Editor

Books are my life and my livelihood. As an independent fiction editor, I specialise in Middle Grade, Young Adult, Fantasy, Sci-Fi and Crime novels. If you’re a writer in need of an editor, get in touch!

Tutor

During term-time, I tutor Year 6 students in English and Maths, and teach Creative Writing at my local primary school. I believe literacy should be fun and inspirational, which is why I love supporting its development in everyone.

Writer

I write freelance for business e-zines and blogs. However, I also write fiction. My current project is a Middle Grade fantasy and my first novel, The Elder Throne, was longlisted for the 2015 Bath Children’s Novel Award.

Podcaster

One of my eternal loves is mythology. To that end, I write and co-host a mythology and folklore podcast, which focuses on the female villains, victims and victors of world mythology. Medusa Was Murdered! will launch in 2024.

What do I love?

Books

My top five favourite books are forever changing, but I’m a guaranteed fan of anything from Robin Hobb, Terry Pratchett or Philip Pullman. I also have soft spots for Roald Dahl, George Orwell, Derek Landy, V.E. Schwab, Aiden Thomas and David Solomons.

Films

I enjoy watching so many films that it’s difficult to pin down a favourite genre. However, over the years, it has become clear to me that my favourite films will rarely change: The Princess BrideRobin Hood: Prince of ThievesDie Hard10 Things I Hate About YouLabyrinthGet Over It.

Music

My music taste is varied: I enjoy Rock, Folk, Ska, left-wing Country, melodic Metal, Golden Oldies and Alternative. However, my current playlist rotation includes songs from Grace Petrie, Jimmy Eat World, Laura Marling, Dorothy, Amaranthe, Kamelot, and Lady Gaga.

Hobbies

Most of my hobbies are solitary pursuits: writing, reading, painting, sketching, baking, and gardening (the last with questionable skill). Yet I also love going to theatre shows and gigs with friends, and trying whatever barmy adventure my spouse has suggested that month.

What else?

Short and oddly-shaped

I’m exactly 5ft tall and, now I’m growing older, I’m beginning to slowly shrink. I also have webbed feet due to a condition called Syndactlyly. Sadly, this doesn’t help me swim better than anyone else (although I really wish it did!).

ADHD Adult

I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, which has answered many questions I had about my life! Now (finally) armed with the correct information, I’m discovering new ways to push myself forward to success.

Linguist…(ish)

I have a conversational grasp of Irish (Gaelic), and a functional knowledge of British Sign Language, which is slowly but steadily improving. I also learned Russian for four years, but the only word I can remember is yezh (hedgehog)!

Animal Lover

I have an irrepressible fondness for animals, especially puppies, manatees and baby snails. Luckily, my partner is an animal lover too, so we’re slowly filling our home with as many fluffy friends as possible.
